Trustees approve promotion, tenure of 57 faculty

     The University of Delaware Board of Trustees approved the promotion
and tenure of 57 faculty members at its regular semiannual meeting May 18
on the University's Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes.
     The trustees also affirmed the appointment of Melvyn D. Schiavelli as
University provost and tenured professor of chemistry and biochemistry.
     Twenty-seven faculty members were promoted to full professor:

        From the College of Agricultural Sciences-John E. Dohms and Jack
          Gelb Jr., both animal science and agricultural biochemistry;
          Roland R. Roth and Douglas W. Tallamy, both entomology and
          applied ecology;
        From the College of Arts and Science-William L. Browning and Peter
          T. Vagenas, both theatre; Daniel F. Callahan, Reed G. Geiger and
          Gary May, all history; Harrison B. Hall, philosophy; Ruth
          Horowitz and Cynthia A. Robbins, both sociology; Mark W.
          Huddleston and James J. Magee, both political science and
          international relations; Judy A. Kennedy and Peter B. Monk, both
          mathematical sciences; Thomas A. Lathrop, foreign languages and
          literatures; Errol L. Lloyd, computer and information sciences;
          and Krzystztof Szalewicz, physics and astronomy;
        From the College of Business and Economics-James L. Butkiewicz and
          Kenneth J. Koford, both economics;
        From the College of Engineering- Antony N. Beris, chemical
          engineering; James T. Kirby Jr., civil engineering; and James
          Kolodzey, electrical engineering; and
        From the College of Nursing-Evelyn R. Hayes, Betty J. Paulanka and
          Janice A. Selekman.
        Twenty-eight faculty have been promoted to associate professor with
          tenure:
        From the College of Agricultural Sciences-Joan Burnside and Lesa G.
          Sterling, both animal science and agricultural biochemistry; and
          W. Gary Smith, plant and soil sciences;
        From the College of Arts and Science-Cynthia S. Burggraf and
          Charles Pavitt, both communication; Theodore J. Davis Jr. and
          Robert A. Denemark, both political science and international
          relations; Douglas J. Doren and Cynthia K. McClure, both
          chemistry and biochemistry; John A. Madsen, geology; Michael
          Paterakis, computer and information sciences; Robin L. Payne,
          theatre; Chandra L. Reedy, art conservation; Willy Riemer and
          Bonnie A. Robb, both foreign languages and literatures; John P.
          Scholz, physical therapy; and April R. Veness, geography;

          business administration;
        From the College of Education-Nancy W. Brickhouse and Deborah A.

     Tenure also was granted to two associate professors: Bernard L.
Herman, art history; and Carlos Plata-Salamon, life and health sciences.
