Outstanding senior female and male athletes chosen

Kim Castellanos and Kevin Blackhurst are the outstanding senior female
and male athletes, respectively, for 1993-94.
Castellanos, a four-year letterwinner in swimming, was honored at the
University's 18th annual Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Awards Banquet in
the Perkins Student Center. She is the first member of the swimming team to
ever earn the award since its inception in 1976-77.
A two-time team outstanding performer, she ended her career at
Delaware holding an unprecedented nine school records, including the
200-meter freestyle, 100-and 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter and 400-meter
individual medley and 200-,400- and 800-meter freestyle relay.
A Spanish major from Middletown, N.J., Castellanos posted 13 top three
finishes in conference championship competition during her career,
including a win in the 200-meter backstroke at the 1993 North Atlantic
Conference championships and team wins in the 400-meter and 800-meter
freestyle relays at the 1991 East Coast Conference championships.
A native of Puerto Rico, Castellanos also competed in the Pan Am Games
as a member of the Puerto Rican National Swimming Team.
Blackhurst, a two-sport athlete and the only person in school history
to participate in the NCAA basketball and baseball tournaments in the same
year, was presented the outstanding senior male athlete award at last
week's Men's Intercollegiate Athletic Banquet in Clayton Hall.
A physical education major from Franklin, Pa., Blackhurst was a
four-year member of the Delaware basketball team that had North Atlantic
Conference (NAC) titles and NCAA tournament appearances in 1992 and 1993.
He is also finishing his third season as an outfielder for Delaware's
baseball team this spring, where he is among the top hitters in school
history.
Blackhurst came to Delaware on a basketball scholarship and helped the
team post a four-year record of 81-38 and the only NCAA tournament
appearances in school history. He set a Delaware single season three-point
field goal percentage record as a freshman with a 45.2 percent mark in
1989-90, ranks third on the all-time, three-point field goal list with 91,
fourth in games played with 111 and seventh in steals with 123. He started
25 games as a senior in 1992-93 when he averaged 8.2 points and 4.2
rebounds per games and was named the Most Valuable Player in the NAC
tournament.
Midway through the 1992 season, Blackhurst joined the baseball team as
a centerfielder. He helped the team win the NAC title and earn a berth in
the NCAA tournament with a 39-14 record. The left-handed hitter became a
regular in 1993 and led both the team and the NAC in batting with a .403
average while knocking in 30 runs, stealing 14 bases and posting a .509
on-base percentage. He was named first team All-East and second team
All-NAC.
This season, the team won the NAC title with its 40-11 regular season
record. Blackhurst is hitting .372 with 26 RBIs, 14 stolen bases and a .470
on-base percentage.
Blackhurst also served as a team co-captain for both teams while at
Delaware.
