Campus garage construction to begin in June
Construction of the University's new student center and parking garage
will begin this summer. The first phase of the project is the garage, which
will begin construction in June.
While construction of the student center building is not scheduled to
begin until early fall, site work on the two projects will necessitate
closing the entire Main Street parking lot for the initial phase of work.
The lot will be closed June 1, and will remain closed to parking until
the garage is completed, which is expected in the spring of 1995. The
garage will be a combination of gate-controlled parking and a pay-to-park
option.
The loss of the lot's 534 gold parking spaces will place a burden on
the campus parking system, according to Gary Summerville, associate
director of public safety.
To meet the parking needs of the University community during the
coming year, public safety is working on a plan that will reduce the number
of cars brought to central campus during peak daytime hours.
That plan includes contacting faculty, staff and graduate students
through ads and articles in both The Review and UpDate, urging them to
modify their current commuting and parking patterns. Carpooling, bicycling,
transit services and walking are all options that will ease the demand for
central campus parking, even if only used a few days each week.
Individuals who currently park in the Main Street lot and must drive
to work are encouraged to plan to use alternative parking areas and to
arrive early.
Reserved-space holders in that lot are being relocated to a variety of
locations.
Some will go to gate-controlled lots and others to reserved spaces in
other lots.
