Vietnam veterans to visit class

Members of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 83, including
Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper, will meet with University of Delaware
students in a special program at the University on Monday, May 9.
"The Vietnam War, Its Veterans and the Next Generation," which is free
and open to the public, will be held from 7-9:30 p.m. in Room 100 of
Kirkbride Lecture Hall.
According to Guy Alchon, associate professor of history, the program
will mark the 10th anniversary of a unique and ongoing conversation between
University students and Vietnam veterans.
In 1984, Alchon started inviting members of Chapter 83 to offer their
insights and share their experiences and knowledge about the conflict with
students in two history department courses: "U.S. History since 1877" and
"The World in Our Time."Those sessions were well received, Alchon said, and
the students learned much from the veterans.
The May 9 program will begin with a 45-minute slide presentation and
comments by various veterans, who will offer their perspectives about the
war and share their individual experiences. Memorabilia also will be
displayed.
Carper will offer brief remarks, and new officers of the chapter will
be sworn in. Members of the University community who served in Vietnam will
be present, including Tim Brooks, assistant vice president of student life;
Kenneth Campbell, assistant professor of international relations; and Bill
Lawson, associate professor of philosophy. A question-and-answer period is
scheduled.
The event is sponsored by the Department of History, the University
Honors Program, the Office of the Dean of Students and Army ROTC.
