Sophs receive major awards

Barry M. Goldwater scholarships, the premier undergraduate award for
students in mathematics, science and engineering, have been given to Surita
Bhatia, a chemical engineering major, and Vinay Harpalani, a biological
sciences major.
Both sophomores are enrolled in the University Honors Program. They
will each receive up to $14,000 during their last two years of
undergraduate study.
On the basis of academic merit, 250 Goldwater scholars were selected
from more than 1,400 applicants, representing all 50 states, Washington,
D.C., Puerto Rico and the United States territories.
The awards were made by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and
Excellence in Education Foundation, a federally endowed agency now in its
sixth year.
