Quality facilities attract national book publisher
It was high-tech education at its best when Addison-Wesley textbook
publishers rolled onto campus late this summer to the ITV studios in Newark
Hall.
With the help of math educators recruited from across the country, the
publishers filmed more than 250 math video segments each 12-20 minutes in
length. Six University students also were recruited to appear in the videos
as classroom students.
The students in the video are Dawn Chang, an entomology undergraduate;
Hemant Chauhan, who is working toward his masters in civil engineering;
Chris Matthews a business major; Jamie Peloso, an animal science
undergraduate; Roberta Jacobs, an economics major; and Ernest McCarter, a
political science major. Their job was to look like typical students and to
pose questions to the presenters.
Melissa Acuna and Kathy Manley, Addison-Wesley editors in charge of
the production, said the finished products will be offered to institutions
that purchase one of five Addison-Wesley math texts. The videos are closely
coordinated to the texts and their material. They can be used by students
who miss classroom lectures or who might need extra help.
The texts and videos, which cover pre-calculus level math, including
some basic arithmetic and basic algebra concepts, are designed for
college-level instruction.
Two of the accompanying texts will be published this fall and will be
available for use in January. The three others will be published in 1995.
The two editors said they chose the University because of its location
and its reputation for quality video production.
"The University of Delaware has very professional facilities. Its
production values are high but the cost is reasonable, and they have a good
reputation for working with publishers," Manley said.
Bettyann Daley, assistant director of the University's Mathematical
Sciences Teaching and Learning Center, sat in the ITV production booth
throughout the taping, monitoring the presenters for accuracy and making
sure the terms used in the videos were the same as those in the text. She
also appeared in the video as a presenter.
