Harrington Commons is open

For students on East Campus who have a paper due, need a quiet place
to study, want to pick up a snack or a new pen, are ready for a session of
aerobics or a work-out or hope to get together informally with friends,
Harrington Commons is the place!
The former dining hall has been transformed into a major student
activity center to enhance campus life, according to David Hollowell,
senior vice president.
The commons includes a computer site, fitness center, convenience
store, quiet study lounge, and an area for socializing.
The computer site, which has approximately 50 personal computers (Macs
and IBM compatibles) and laser printers available for student use, will be
managed by Computing and Network Services.
The Harrington Commons also adds to the availability of student
fitness programs and equipment on campus. The fitness center at Carpenter
Sports Building, for example, is very popular and is always booked well in
advance, Hollowell said.
Administered by the College of Physical Education, Athletics and
Recreation, the center at Harrington Commons has an aerobics room, with a
specially constructed floor, and a fitness room with weight-resistance
equipment, including treadmills, steppers, climbers and exercise bicycles.
Dining Services is operating a convenience store in the commons,
similar to those serving students on the north and west campuses.
The back room of the commons has been converted into a quiet study
room, and the front sun room serves as a lounge for socializing.
"We are pleased to have this opportunity to provide additional
facilities to enhance student life on campus," Hollowell said.
