Travel awards
     The Commission on the Status of Women is sponsoring the Special Travel
Award Program for the 1993-94 fiscal year.
     The awards are intended to improve the position of women at the
University in two ways: by encouraging all faculty and professionals to
present scholarly papers and participate in panel discussions and other
activities dealing with women's issues and by facilitating the career
development of women faculty and professionals.
     Deadline for fall semester submission is Nov. 1, and application forms
are available from the Office of Women's Affairs. Deadline for spring
semester is April 1.
     A committee will review the requests and announce fall semester awards
no later than Nov. 15 and spring awards by April 15.

Research funding
     Full-time faculty and professional staff are invited to apply for
funds for individual research projects in the arts, humanities and social
sciences.
     For General University Research guidelines and an application, call
the Office of the Vice Provost for Research at 831-2136. Deadline for
submitting applications to department chairpersons is Oct. 25. Grants will
be awarded in January.

Prostate seminar
     The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program and the College of Nursing
will co-sponsor a presentation and discussion about prostate cancer from
noon-1 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Kirkwood Room of the Perkins
Student Center. A speaker from the American Cancer Society will provide
information and answer questions about prostate cancer. There will be free
gifts for participants.
     Registration, which is required, may be made by calling Jean Pasapane
at 831-2414 no later than Sept. 20. This workshop is open to both men and
women.

Newark coffeehouse
     In association with the Downtown with the Arts Festival to be held in
Newark on Sept. 17, there will be a community center coffeehouse
demonstration project from 5:30-9 p.m., at the Treats Bakery Cafe on Main
Street.
     The event is free, and all ages are welcome. Events will include
musical performances, games, juggling, drama and more. For performance

Community Day
     The 22nd annual Newark Community Day will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.,
Sunday, Sept. 19, on the University Mall. The rain date is Sunday, Sept.
26.
     The day's events will include music, food, antiques and collectibles.

Washington shuttle
     The Washington, D.C., shuttle for faculty and graduate students only,
is already operating each Friday and will continue through the academic
year until June.
     Departure is scheduled at 7:30 a.m. from the Perkins Student Center
parking lot. The shuttle will leave Washington, D.C., at 4:30 p.m. and
return to Newark at 6:30 p.m. Reservations must be made by noon, Thursdays.

Women's Club
     The first meeting of the University's Women's Club will be held at 7
p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the President's House, 47 Kent Way.
     The meeting will be hosted by Louise Roselle. Items on the agenda
include joining or starting an interest group, volunteering for the holiday
craft sale, signing up for wine and cheese tasting, as well as socializing
and dessert.

Study abroad
     Deadline for Winter Session and spring study abroad programs is Oct.
15. Programs for Winter Session are available in London, Martinique,
Mexico, Italy, Israel, Costa Rica, Switzerland, Germany, France, Spain,
Japan and Hungary.
     The spring program includes study abroad in Austria, Costa Rica,
France, Scotland and England.

Recreation programs
     The University's Recreation and Intramural Program is offering
programs this fall in gymnastics, martial arts and ballroom dancing. The
gymnastics program is open to children ages 4-12, Martial arts is open to
children 6 years and older, and ballroom dancing is offered at the beginner
and intermediate level for adults.
