Diversity
Diversity workshops scheduled this fall
Making the University of Delaware a "diversity-friendly" campus
community is the overarching commitment of the Commission to Promote Racial
and Cultural Diversity. Commission members adopted this commitment at a
day-long retreat held July 9.
James Newton, commission chair, presented excerpts from a recent
concept paper, "Toward Becoming a Diversity-Friendly University Community,"
as part of the program. Newton suggested an inclusive approach to diversity
issues, one that looks for "the common ground we can all share without
being disagreeable."
In his view, a diversity-friendly University would instill in its
workforce that each individual is a valued member of the University
community team and an active partner in creating a diversity-friendly
atmosphere in their respective work units. To advance this concept, the
commission will expand diversity education opportunities during the 1993-94
year.
The commission's Diversity Education Taskforce has scheduled seven
one-day "Welcoming Diversity" workshops this fall for members of the
University community-faculty, staff and students. A similar number are
planned for the spring semester. The workshops help participants understand
and deal with various forms of discrimination and further the goal of the
commission, namely, to bring us closer to achieving a community where
dialog and discourse are the dictates of the day.
There is no cost for workshop attendance, and sessions will be held
during the workweek and on Saturdays to accommodate the schedules of
participants.
Full-day sessions will be offered throughout the semester. Weekday
workshops are scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m.; Saturday workshops will
be held from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Workshops are open to all members of the University community.
Participants should plan to eat lunch together. Depending upon the
particular workshop location, lunch can be purchased. Beverages will be
provided.
Pre-registration is required. To register, call 831-8735, send an
