Students learn networking
Minority freshmen and sophomores were introduced to the corporate
world at "Enhancing Your Professional Development," the ninth annual
minority career development conference, sponsored March 19 by the UD
Minority Career Development Committee and J.P. Morgan Delaware at their
corporate site in Stanton.
According to Jack Townsend, director of Career Planning and Placement,
this is the first year the event took place off campus. About 85 students
participated, with several alumni and others volunteering as panelists. The
theme of the conference was the importance of networking.
Donald Brunner, Delaware '66, senior vice president of J.P. Morgan
Delaware, made opening and closing remarks. Keynote speakers were Wayne
Crosse, Delaware '75, director of personnel for Wilmington, who spoke on
"Networking: When, Where and How," and Ray Manza, vice president and
manager, global markets, at J.P. Morgan Delaware, who spoke on "Making
Cultural Diversity Work."
Zenobia Hikes, associate director of admissions, and Victoria Orner,
director of NUCLEUS (Network of Undergraduate Collaborative Learning
Experiences for Underrepresented Scholars) in the College of Arts and
Science, devised a networking game, involving the students and
alumni/panelists.
Alumni/panelists included Kevin Adams, undergraduate; Jose
Barriocanal, graduate student; Larry Carson, Delaware '81; Bernadette
Dorsey, Delaware '92; Velda Jones-Potter, Delaware '79, Tracy Lynn Kellum,
Delaware '92; Aaron Marshall, Delaware '93; Danielle Martin-Moffett,
Delaware '87; Samuel Ross, Delaware '93; Janel Steptoe, Delaware '93;
Tameka Taylor, Delaware '93; and Chaka Williams, Delaware '93.
Robert Landsiedel, executive director of special events and president
of EMX, presented a luncheon workshop, "Wine, Dine and Act Fine."
