'Glamour' editor to speak on women's health issues
Linda Gordon, an editor at Glamour magazine, will speak on
breast-health awareness for young women at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 10, in the
auditorium of Newark Hall. The program is free and open to the public.
Gordon's talk is part of "Hand-In-Hand," an ongoing, national
breast-health education program she developed for Glamour to serve women
ages 19-39. Funded by Hanes Hosiery, the program is designed to empower
women to take control of their breast health rather than ignore it out of
fear, lack of knowledge or passivity.
It focuses on reduction and early detection of breast cancer and
teaches women that, while there is no proven way to prevent the disease,
there are three easy steps a woman can take to help reduce her risk of
contracting it- by making a commitment:
* Once a day to a healthier diet,
* Once a month to breast self-exam and
* Once a year to make an appointment with a health professional for
a breast exam.
As explained by Cathy Volker, president of Hanes, "We wanted to do
something for women that was proactive and positive. This fresh,
take-charge-of-your-life approach to breast health-rather than one
stressing awareness only-appealed to us enormously."
In addition to creating the Hand-In-Hand program, Gordon serves as
service editor at Glamour. She has written numerous articles on health,
diet, nutrition and body image and developed the magazine's 1983 body-image
survey, which generated over 33,000 responses. She is currently responsible
for the Realities/Resources section of the magazine, which provides readers
information on consumer issues, personal safety and the environment.
Before joining Glamour, she was a sales presentation writer at the
National Broadcasting Co. and worked in corporate public relations at
Cluett, Peabody & Co. Inc. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan,
where she was a member of the Senior Honor Society.
The Glamour/Hanes Hand-In-Hand program is being distributed to college
campuses, health clubs, fitness centers and doctors' offices, in
conjunction with the National Cancer Institute, the American College Health
Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and
the American Health Foundation.
Gordon's local appearance is sponsored by the University's Panhellenic
Council, the Wilmington Panhellinic Council and Wellspring, the
University's health education program.
