Opera workshop to present performances statewide
The Department of Music's Opera Workshop 1994, scheduled April 30, May
1, 6 and 8, will showcase Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience, an outrageously
funny satire of love and courtship.
Patience takes two rival poets battling for the affection of 20
lovesick maidens, adds the queen's dragoon guards, a mad lady cellist and
an innocent milkmaid to produce a hilarious romp full of British wit and
boisterous music.
The art of solo vocal performance is the focus of the University of
Delaware's Opera Workshop, co-directed by voice faculty members Melanie
DeMent and Marie Robinson.
Singers will be challenged to create complete operatic roles, and
members of the workshop will receive individual coaching in both vocal and
dramatic techniques, providing an environment that nurtures the development
of the singer who aspires to a performing career.
This year's performances are at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 30, and at 3
p.m. Sunday, May 1, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music
Building. Southern Delaware performances are scheduled at 8 p.m., Friday,
May 6, in Central Middle School, Dover; and 2 p.m., Sunday, May 8, in Cape
Henlopen Senior High School, Lewes.
These presentations are sponsored by the Department of Music, Student
Center Programs Advisory Board and Office of University and Alumni
Relations.
General admission for all performances is $5. To reserve tickets, call
831-2577; for southern Delaware, call 855-1620 or 735-8200.
