International Opportunities

     Fulbright Scholar awards for U.S. faculty and professionals, 1995-96
competition (4/21-1)-Fulbright opportunities are available for university
lecturing or advanced research in nearly 140 countries. Each year, grantees
come from over 500 colleges and universities and public and private
agencies in all 50 states. Every academic rank-from instructor to professor
emeritus-is represented. Non-tenured faculty and professionals outside
academe are encouraged to apply. Funding is provided by the U.S Information
Agency and cooperating governments and host institutions abroad. Awards
range from two months to a full academic year, and many assignments are
flexible to the needs of the grantee. Virtually all disciplines
participate. Openings exist in almost every area of the humanities, social
sciences, natural and applied sciences, the arts and such professional
fields as business, journalism and law. Basic eligibility requirements are
U.S. citizenship and the Ph.D. or comparable professional qualifications
(for certain fields such as the fine arts or TESOL, the terminal degree in
the field may be sufficient). For lecturing awards, university or college
teaching experience is expected. Language skills are needed for some
countries, but most lecturing assignments are in English. Deadline for all
research or lecturing grants to all world areas is Aug. 1. Other deadlines

     University of Cape Town postdoctoral research fellowships, 1995
(4/21-2)-The University of Cape Town annually invites applications for
postdoctoral research fellowships. There is no restriction to any
particular field of research. The fellowships are intended for recently
qualified workers. Preference will be given to candidates from outside the
University of Cape Town who are not yet in established posts and who have
not previously held postdoctoral appointments, as well as those whose
research interests and facility needs mesh well with those of the
appropriate host department. The fellowships are normally tenable for 12
months, but shorter visits will be considered. The stipend (at lecturer
level) attached to the fellowship is calculated at R4,800 per month.
Successful candidates from abroad will receive an additional travel grant,
up to a maximum of R12,000. Deadline, June 30. Initial round of award

     Franklin Mosher Baldwin fellowships of the L.S.B. Leakey Foundation
(4/21-3)- Intended only for scholars and students from Africa who seek to
obtain an advanced degree in an area of study related to human origins
research. This award is limited to a two-year program of advanced training
The applicant must have a home sponsor who is a member of the institution
where the applicant is affiliated in the home country, and a host sponsor
who is a member of the institution in which the candidate plans to pursue
training. Awards are limited to two years. Maximum award is $8,500 per year
for non-tuition expenses. Successful applicants are eligible to apply for
limited travel and fieldwork expenses, up to $3,000. Applicants should be
prepared to work with the home and host institutions to obtain initial
travel funds whenever possible. Baldwin fellowships may be used to cover
living expenses, student fees, insurance, books and other relevant

     Japanese Government Monbusho Scholarship (4/21-4)-The Monbusho
Scholarship enables foreign students from 100 countries to study for
one-two years in Japan. The Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and
Culture works in cooperation with local, national and private universities
to promote these scholarships. Three scholarship categories are open to
U.S. citizens: the Japanese Studies Scholarship for undergraduates to study
Japanese language and culture, the In-Service Training for Teaching
Scholarship for pre-collegiate Japanese instructors to train in methods of
teaching Japanese as a foreign languages and the Research Fellowship for
post-graduates to research a broad range of topics in Japanese universities
and educational institutions. All 16 Japanese consulates in the U.S. are
currently accepting applications and will administer interviews and a
Japanese language exam to screen qualified individuals. Deadlines vary. For

     Latin American studies fellowships (4/21-5)-Sponsored by the Joint
Committee on Latin American Studies of the Social Science Research Council
and the American Council of Learned Societies dissertation fellowships in
the social sciences and humanities. Recipients are expected to devote 9-18
months to field research in the country or countries relevant to the
proposals. There are no citizenship requirements. Applicants must be
enrolled in full-time graduate study at a university in the U.S. and have
completed all Ph.D. requirements except the dissertation before going to

     Villa I Tatti: The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance
Studies (4/21-6)-The center is offering up to 15 fellowships for
independent study on any aspect of the Italian Renaissance for the academic
year 1995-96. The fellowships, which can be stipendiary or non-stipendiary,
are for scholars of any nationality, normally post-doctoral and in the
earlier stages of their careers. The maximum grant is $30,000; most will be
considerably less. Fellows are required to devote full time to their
projects and may not have other obligations such as teaching, during the
fellowship year. Applicants should send application form, a curriculum

     USAID population/environment fellowships (4/21-7)-The U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID) is sponsoring a program to place
population and environment specialists in developing country government
agencies or non-governmental organizations for a period of two years. The
Population/Environment Fellows Program aims to help developing country
institutions respond to development issues and welcomes applications from
both host-country institutions and potential fellows. Fellow must be a U.S.
citizen or resident aliens, hold a graduate degree in a related area and
have demonstrated population and environment expertise through course work
