IBM adds University to its FOCUS program

The University of Delaware is the only school to be added this year to
IBM's FOCUS program, a national recruitment effort that also supports
faculty and students, according to Jack Townsend, director of the Career
Planning and Placement Office.
The FOCUS program is selective. Only 58 schools have been targeted as
participants by IBM for 1994-95, Townsend said.
According to John Fergelli, national recruitment coordinator for IBM,
the decision to include Delaware was based on the advice of an outside
consultant that identified the school's record of excellence and number of
students enrolled in the departments of Chemical Engineering, Electrical
Engineering and Computer and Information Sciences for inclusion in FOCUS.
IBM will continue to recruit accounting and business students, as it
has in the past, but will expand its interaction with the University under
FOCUS, according to Townsend. FOCUS supports faculty research, gives
student groups financial support, sends speakers to the campus and makes
the expertise of IBM employees available.
"We are pleased with the recognition IBM has given to the University
of Delaware by its selection for FOCUS. This kind of interaction between
industry and the University benefits both and provides opportunities for
Delaware faculty, students and graduates," Townsend said.
