Geis research conference to spotlight student excellence

     The Geis Student Research on Women Conference will be held from 10
a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, April 28, in the Kirkwood Room of the Perkins
Student Center.
     The program is presented annually to provide recognition of student
excellence in research.
     Kate Conway-Turner, director of women's studies, will welcome
participants and guests at 10 a.m.
     The conference presentations will begin at 10:10 a.m. A five-minute
discussion period will follow each 15-minute presentation.
     The program will include the following topics:

        "The Reproduction of Inequality in the Criminal Justice System: The
          Case of the Female Offender," Jill McCorkel, sociology;
        "Nutrition, Knowledge, Attitude and Dietary Intakes of Female
          Athletes: Impact of Nutrition Education," Sharon Cowan,
          nutrition;
        "Woman Candidate=Feminist: Are We Leaving Something Out?" Marlaine
          White, political science;
        "Mature Women Students' Decisions About College, Work and Family:
          The Gender Division of Labor's Effect on Everyday Life,"
          Sarah-Jane Brubaker, sociology;
        "Reconstruction through Resistance: Catholic Feminists at Work,"
          Christine Mowery, sociology;
        "Ecofeminism: A Bridge Between Environmentalism and Feminism," Anne
          York, sociology;
        "Battered Women: Treatment and Social Work Implications," Janice
          Moore, women's studies;
        "The Feeling Mind: Constructions of Feminine Virtue in Clarissa and
          Maria," Sue Anne Beyer, English;
        "Selfhood Through Ambivalence: The Mother-Daughter Bond in Susan
          Warner's The Wide, Wide World," Heather Coyne, English;
        "Female Abolitionist Verse and the Poetics of Sentiment," Pamela
          Simpson, English;
        "Structuring Houses and Women: Atwood and Hurston Construct the
          Female Character," Jennifer Millard, English;
        "Can Documentary Bring About Social Reform?: Three Battered-Women
          Documentaries Examined," Allison Bojarski, English;
        "Language and Gender in Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion," Sarah Cornell,
          English;
        "Christianity, Communism and Dogma: Mary Van Kleeck and the Search
          for Utopia," Ellen Cone, history;
        "The Power of Judith's Hand," Tara Zanardi, art history; and
        "The Quest for Self Realization," Susana Carrasco, philosophy.

     A reception with refreshments will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Blue and
Gold Room of the the Perkins Student Center. During that time, the graduate
and undergraduate winners of the President's Award will be announced.
     The event is sponsored by the Office of Women's Affairs and Women's
Studies Interdisciplinary Program, in cooperation with the Commission on on
the Status of Women and the Office of the President.
