Congregation sends thanks
The Calvary Baptist Church, on Delaware Avenue near Haines Street, is
grateful to Edward Burris, an investigator with Public Safety.
On New Year's Eve, Burris was in a patrol car on his regular 3-11 p.m.
shift. It was cold and windy, but as is customary police procedure, his car
window remained open. As he drove past the church, he heard the outdoor
alarm and thought there was a break-in.
Instead, a frozen pipe had set off the sprinkler system and alarm, and
water was flooding the building. Burris immediately alerted the fire
department, which responded promptly, and called church pastor, the Rev.
Daniel Mac Donald, whose name is on the police list as the one responsible
for the building.
In a letter to President David P. Roselle, Mac Donald expressed his
and the congregation's thanks, saying the water could have caused extensive
building damage before it was discovered and that the church was now adding
a monitoring system.
Mac Donald ended his letter, "Our relationship with the University at
many levels has always been positive and reciprocal. This incident has been
just another confirmation of our good neighbor relationship. Please pass on
our commendation to Mr. Burris...."
