Awards recognize faculty service

Kevin Kerrane, English; James A. Inciardi, sociology and criminal
justice; and Barnaby Munson, chemistry and biochemistry, are recipients of
the first College of Arts and Science awards to recognize outstanding
service to the academic life of the University.
Each award consists of $1,000 for the faculty member and the
opportunity to designate a $1,000 scholarship to a deserving undergraduate
or graduate student.
This first year, 26 candidates were nominated, and a ceremony honoring
the winners was held April 6 at Clayton Hall.
The Arts and Science Outstanding Teacher Award was given to Kerrane,
who has twice won the University's excellence-in-teaching award, has won
kudos for his teaching from students, has actively served in advisement and
initiated and supervised the foreign film series at the University.
The Arts and Science Outstanding Scholar Award was presented to
Inciardi, a scholar who has done research in substance abuse and its
treatment for more than two decades. Inciardi has authored or edited close
to 25 books, including a widely used basic textbook in criminal justice now
in its fifth edition, and approximately 150 journal articles and chapters.
He has received more than $15 million in grants and, as a consultant,
shares his research so that his knowledge may be put to practice.
The Arts and Science Outstanding Faculty Member Award, recognizing
exceptional achievements in teaching, scholarship and service, was given to
Munson. The recipient of the excellence-in teaching award and selected as
the University's Alison Scholar in 1992, Munson was instrumental in
initiating the University Honors Program and served as its director. He has
published and lectured extensively in the field of mass spectrometry.
