Professor named AIChE fellow

Stanley I. Sandler, Henry Belin du Pont Professor of Chemical
Engineering and director of the Center for Molecular and Engineering
Thermodynamics at the University, has been named a fellow of the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Fellow status is one of the
highest honors that can be conferred on a chemical engineer.
Author of 185 technical publications, Sandler is an educator and
researcher in thermodynamics, separations, processes and statistical
mechanics and has been frequently honored for his work and contributions.
Last August, he became the University's most recent recipient of the
Alison Award, established by the Board of Trustees in 1978 to recognize
scholarship, processional achievements and dedication by faculty.
That year, he also received the Phillips Lecture Award from the
Philips Petroleum Co. and the School of Chemical Engineering at Oklahoma
State University, which annually honors one outstanding educator in the
field of chemical engineering.
His other awards include the AIChE's Professional Progress Award in
1984 and Germany's A.V. Humbolt Senior Scientist Award in 1988.
Sandler is the author of Chemical and Engineering Thermodynamics, a
widely used textbook published by John Wiley. He is a consultant to several
oil and chemical companies and serves on the advisory committees for
chemical engineering at several universities.
A graduate of City College of New York and the University of
Minnesota, Sandler began his career at the University of Delaware in 1967.
He went on to serve as chairperson of the Department of Chemical
Engineering, interim dean of the College of Engineering and the first
director of the Center of for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics.
Sandler was named Henry Belin du Pont Professor in 1982. He has served as a
visiting professor in Europe, Australia and Argentina.
To qualify for fellow status in AIChE, a person must be a practicing
engineer for more than 25 years, a member of the institute for 10 years and
be sponsored by five of his or her peers.
