Outdoor sculpture on temporary display

Sky High," a work of outdoor sculpture by New York sculptor Wendy
Lehman, was recently installed on the campus and will remain on view
through the fall semester. Cast in 1987, the statue, a triptych of painted
hexel aluminum, stands 8 feet tall. It may be seen in the courtyard
boardered by Smith, Kirkbride, Ewing and Purnell Halls. Lehman, a graduate
of Sarah Lawrence College, has gained considerable acclaim over the past
decade. Next fall, she will visit the Newark campus to talk about
contemporary public art.
"Sky High" is the first in a series of loans to the University from
the Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York City.
Arrangements were made by an ad hoc committee of University professors
that included Thomas O. Calhoun, professor of English; Wayne Craven, H.F.
du Pont Professor of Art History; William I. Homer, H. Rodney Sharp
Professor of Art History; Joe Moss, professor of art; and Damie Stillman,
John W. Shirley Professor of Art History. The exhibit is sponsored by the
University's Committee for Cultural Activities and Public Events, of which
Calhoun is chair.
