Women's conference hosts author at 10th anniversary
Nobody is a total grown-up; people are works in progress,"
award-winning author Judith Viorst told those attending the 10th annual
Delaware Women's Conference, held March 5 in Clayton Hall.
Viorst, who is the author of 11 children's books, three books of prose
and six poem collections, said, "Nobody is so grown up that they don't
harbor a few crazy dreams."
Viorst was selected as the event's keynote speaker because she talks
about "the different choices and stages of a woman's life," according to
Peggy Sacher, conference chairperson. Past speakers have included Betty
Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro.
In all, some 1,000 women from all over the state attended the
conference, whose theme this year was "Choices, Challenges and Changes."
Conference highlights included more than 50 workshops on topics
ranging from "Perspectives on Family Violence" to "Take the Fear Out of
Buying a Car." Delaware women artists exhibited works from jewelry to
quilts, and there was also a lesson in country line dancing.
The conference was created to bring together women of all ages,
economic backgrounds and lifestyles.
