Used book sale
     The Wilmington branch of the American Association of University Women
(AAUW) will hold its Dollars for Scholars annual used book sale at the
Concord Mall from 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, March 10-12, and
from noon-5 p.m., Sunday, March 13. Included in the sale will be 45,000
books and a large quantity of sheet music. In addition, a silent auction of
unusual books will be held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Thursday, March 10.
     Proceeds of the sale will benefit the branch's scholarship fund and
AAUW's national fellowship foundation.

Surplus for sale
     The University will offer the following vehicles for sale: a 1968
International Loadster 1600 and a 1966 International F-18. Questions
concerning the condition of the equipment should be directed to Bruce
Campbell in the Lewes Operations and Maintenance Department at 645-4322.
     For information on the purchase of the equipment, contact Linda Cofran
or Ginger Miller in the Purchasing Department at 831-8292.

Alumni scholarships
     Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Emalea Pusey Warner
and Alexander J. Taylor Sr. awards to the outstanding senior woman and man
and for the Draper Scholarship, which honors the late Milton L. Draper,
former Alumni Association president, honorary lifetime member of the Alumni
Board and Sigma Nu fraternity member.
     To be eligible for Warner/Taylor award consideration, nominees must
have a cumulative index of 3.0 or better at the end of the first semester
of their senior year and must demonstrate outstanding qualities of
leadership, citizenship and character.
     Each award consists of a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, presented on Honors
Day. The recipients also will be invited to lead the procession of alumni
delegates at the 1994 Commencement on May 28.
     Warner and Taylor award nominations must be received by 5 p.m.,
Monday, March 21.
     A Draper award nominee must be a full-time junior or senior in the
fall of 1994, with a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Students must exhibit
outstanding performance in fostering student-alumni interaction and provide
strong leadership, dedication and enthusiasm for the University.
     The recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the 1994-95
academic year. The deadline for application/ nomination form is Tuesday,
March 15.

Nominations due
     Nominations are being accepted for the excellence-in-teaching and
excellence-in-academic advising awards. Nominations should be submitted by
completing nomination forms. A separate form should be submitted for each
person nominated. Petitions will not be considered.
     Forms are available in the University Faculty Senate Office, located
at 219 McDowell Hall, department offices and at the main desk of the
Student Center. Completed forms should be returned to the University
Faculty Senate Office no later than March 15.

Blue & Gold special
     Beginning Tuesday, March 8, the Blue and Gold Club's Tavern will offer
a new selection of inexpensive, happy-hour food and bar drinks. Happy hour
will be held from 4:30-7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and the menu will
include build-your-own tacos, hot dogs with fixin's, peel-and-eat shrimp
and fresh steamed clams.
     Membership is required and all University employees are eligible. Dues
are $25 until June 30. Call UD1-CLUB for an application.

Ballroom dancing
     The University's Ballroom Dancing Club is designed for those
interested in both instruction and competitive dancing. An intramural
ballroom dance session will be offered for eight weeks beginning Sunday,
March 20, in the front gym of Carpenter Sports Building. Beginning and
advanced ballroom dancing will be offered.
     The spring ballroom dance schedule includes jitterbug and swing,
Saturday, March 5; waltz, Saturday, April 9; cha-cha, Saturday, April 30;
and a dinner dance, Thursday, May 15.
     Saturday dances cost $10 or $5 for students with ID.

Chess exhibition
     The University Chess Club will hold a chess exhibition from 1 -5 p.m.,
Saturday, March 5, in front of Strawbridge & Clothier at Christiana Mall to
raise awareness about chess and the club's recent formation.

Bowling for kids
     Each year Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Delaware conducts "Bowl for
Kids' Sake" to support friendships between adult volunteers and children
from single-parent families.
     Last year, 300 teams from business, government and community
organizations participated. The 13th annual event will take place Saturday,
April 9, in New Castle County at Bowlerama, Price Lanes and Pike Creek
Bowling Center and in Sussex County at Midway Bowling Center. The Kent
County event will occur Sunday, April 10, at Dover Bowl.
     The University is participating in the fund-raiser. Interested
individuals may form teams of five or six members who are willing to
solicit sponsorship on a cents-per-pin basis.
     University groups should be registered by March 25. For information,

Award opportunities
     Nominations are now being sought for the Bessie B. Collins and Mae
Carter awards for returning adult women, sponsored by the Office of Women's
Affairs and the Commission on the Status of Women.
     The Collins award of $200 is given annually to a woman student who
over 25 years old, a matriculated junior, has a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0,
demonstrates future promise, and has contributed to the University and
overcome special difficulties.
     The Carter award of $250 is given to a returning adult graduate or
undergraduate women with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 who has provided service
to women on campus and has shown commitment to scholarship.
     Deadline for nominations for both awards is March 12.
