Outreach director named

Robert W. Sample has been named assistant dean for the recently
established Engineering Outreach Program in the University's College of
Engineering, Dean Stuart L. Cooper has announced.
From 1989-93, Sample was director of professional education at Cornell
University. In that role, he administered a master of engineering degree
program for approximately 350 students.
"We are extremely pleased that our national search was successful in
attracting an individual with Bob Sample's experience and the expertise to
guide the development of our new Engineering Outreach Program," Cooper
said.
Cooper also announced the appointment of Kathleen C. Werrell as
associate director for engineering outreach. Formerly coordinator of
special projects in the college, Werrell recently served as assistant to
the University provost.
The Engineering Outreach Program offers a variety of resources for
engineering professionals, including late afternoon/evening graduate credit
courses, non-thesis master's degrees, short update courses and distance
learning media such as video courses.
Recognizing that today's professionals are constantly challenged to
keep abreast of technological change in the dynamic and competitive
engineering environment, the college has specially designed its new program
to provide the practicing engineer with accessible, convenient, effective
and high-quality continuing professional education, Cooper said.
During the 1994 spring semester, 21 graduate engineering courses are
being offered through engineering outreach, including topics in chemical,
civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as materials science.
These courses can be taken independently or applied toward a master's
degree, including the non-thesis option available in chemical, civil and
mechanical engineering. Non-thesis options are being developed in
electrical engineering and materials science, as well. Courses focusing on
environmental engineering and composites technology are expected to be
particularly popular.
The college is currently working with area companies to design
programs geared to their specific needs.
"I feel very positive about the possibilities here at the University
of Delaware," Sample said. "A survey of area companies has been done and
shows great enthusiasm for the program."
From 1986-1989, Sample served as professor and chairperson of
Cornell's Department of Aerospace Studies. He is a former U.S. Air Force
pilot who served in a number of capacities including three Pentagon
assignments. He also spent one year as a research associate at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds an undergraduate
engineering degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and the MSBA in economics
from the University of Rochester.
