Fund raiser to help alumnus
A silent auction, a songfest and a poetry reading are among the
special events scheduled Feb. 28-March 2 at the University of Delaware to
raise funds to help 1991 graduate Brian Fleury, an honor student, an
outstanding Blue Hens pitcher and 1990's ECC Most Valuable Player.
Fleury is recovering from Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer. A
fund-raising group, Friends of Brian Fleury, has been formed to help him
pay his medical bills, which will total more than $100,000 after the
insurance pays its percentage. Fleury, who is teaching and coaching at
Delbarton School in New Jersey, has undergone chemotherapy and had a bone
marrow transplant, and the prognosis is good.
Special events planned by Fleury's friends in the UD athletic and
English departments include:
* a used book sale Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 28-March 2, in the foyer
of Memorial Hall, coordinated by the English honor society;
and three events on Wednesday, March 2:
* a silent auction from 3-7 p.m., in Room 123 of Memorial Hall,
with items to include rare and signed books, vintage wine, art
works and a week's vacation in Maine;
* a songfest, featuring a performance by The Elderly Brothers,
from 4-5 p.m., in Room 120 of Memorial Hall; and
* a poetry reading with W.D. Snodgrass, Distinguished Professor in
Creative Writing and Contemporary Poetry, and other members of
the English faculty, at 7:30 p.m., in Room 110 of Memorial Hall.
Donations, which are tax-deductible, will be accepted at the door.
Checks, made payable to Friends of Brian Fleury, may be sent to: Linda
Russell, who is coordinating the events, in the Department of English or
directly to Friends of Brian Fleury, Box 536, Convent Station, NJ
07964-0536.
