     Listed below are Employee Development classes offered this spring. To
register, follow the instructions printed at the end of the course listing.

For all University employees

Defensive Driving
     The eight-hour presentation of the National Safety Council's Driver
Improvement Program includes crash-avoidance techniques, rules of the road
and safe driving practices. Satisfactory completion of the program by
Delaware residents results in a three-point credit added to an individual's
driving record and an insurance discount (minimum of 10 percent each year
for three years).
     Topics will include various crash-avoidance techniques based on the
standard accident prevention formula developed by professional drivers.
     NOTE: There is a $25 fee for this class. No telephone registrations
will be taken for this workshop. Registration must be made by campus or
U.S. mail and be accompanied by a check, made payable to "Delaware Safety
Council."

Advanced Defensive Driving
     "Coaching the Experience Driver" is designed for the individual who
has had several years of driving experience but who may need to
"freshen-up" his or her driving skills. Through films, slides, discussion
and individual work, the program gives the driver important cues that can
be used in daily driving to reduce the number of "near misses" or actual
accidents. It is a fast-paced program, presenting techniques that can
assist the well-motivated driver to drive like a professional. Employees
who complete the program receive a 15 percent discount on their insurance
(not in addition to the 10 percent from basic Defensive Driving).
     Note: There is a $20 fee for this class. No telephone registration
will be taken for this workshop. Registration must be made mail and
accompanied by a check, made out to "Delaware Safety Council."

     Introduction to University Forms and Recordkeeping II
     Participants will learn and practice the correct completion of the
following types of forms: Supplies and Expense, Exceptional Payroll and
Duplicating/Printing.

Networking: Managing Internal Relationships
     Getting the Job Done...Trouble Shooting...Problem Solving...Talking it
Out. Effectively managing relationships with colleagues, subordinates and
supervisors can increase everyone's ability to do the best job possible
with the most complete information. An understanding of the elements of
successful collegial relationships can help us apply the principles to
relationships that have not been as successful.

Performance appraisal workshops scheduled
     Employee Services is offering several performance appraisal workshops
in February and March to introduce University employees to the forms and
procedures for evaluating performance. The salaried staff performance
appraisal workshop is designed for all members of the University community
who will use this new form, both salaried staff members and supervisors of
salaried staff employees. The Performance Appraisal Workshop for
professionals introduces the form used for professional-level employee
evaluations. Supervisors new to the performance appraisal process are
encouraged to enroll in the Performance Appraisal for Supervisors Workshop
to learn how to conduct the performance appraisal interview.
     Interested employees should select the class they are most interested
in and enroll via Email to EmplDevReg or call 831-8725.

Performance appraisal for salaried staff
     Completing the new performance appraisal form for salaried staff will
be the focus in this workshop. Each section will be briefly reviewed as
will the annual performance appraisal system. The importance of the
discussion between the individual and their supervisor will also be
emphasized. Using the performance appraisal system to improve performance
and identify career development needs will also be discussed.

Performance appraisal for professionals
     This workshop acquaints professionals with the major elements of the
annual performance appraisal system and emphasizes the importance of
discussion between the individual and their supervisor in that process.
Participants will review the steps involved in identifying major
responsibilities and completing the self-appraisal worksheet. Use of the
appraisal system to foster performance improvement and assist in career
development will also be highlighted.

Performance appraisal for supervisors
     The workshop is a must for new supervisors. It is designed to enhance
supervisors' evaluation skills through setting and communicating goal
setting for personal improvement.

two weeks prior to the workshop date.
