Charlotte Coleman's artwork on exhibit in Newark Free Library
For those who would like to escape from the daily grind of the winter
that just will not quit, a brief stop at the Newark Free Library to view
the current display of art works may be just the ticket.
Within the warm and friendly confines of the library--on Library
Avenue across from College Square--are some 23 works by local artist and
University staff member Charlotte Coleman.
"The works on display are of a highly personal nature," Coleman said.
"Many deal with family gatherings and include my children and an uncle from
Indiana."
Coleman, a senior secretary in the Department of Civil Engineering,
graduated from Indiana University Northwest with a B.A. in fine arts. She
has been exhibiting her work since 1978.
Shortly after moving to Delaware in 1986, Coleman staged an exhibition
at the Christina Cultural Arts Center in Wilmington.
Although the current exhibition consists mostly of watercolors, there
are also drawings, mixed media works and sumi ink washes.
Sumi ink, a Japanese medium obtained by mixing water and hand-ground
charcoal, has been adapted by Coleman to a more traditional Western-style
usage.
"The mixture produces a nice ink," Coleman said, "and a much warmer
effect than that obtained from India ink."
Prior to the current exhibit, Coleman's art was on display during the
1993 University Staff and Faculty Art Exhibition at the Perkins Student
Center Gallery and at the 90 East Main St. Restaurant in Newark.
The exhibit will be on display at the Newark Free Library during the
month of February.
