Willard E. Baxter recognized

Willard E. Baxter, professor of mathematical sciences, received the
Webber Award for his work in advancing mathematics education. Given every
two years, the award is a plaque and a check for at least $100.
The first person from the University to receive the award since its
inception in 1983, Baxter was cited for serving for many years as principal
contact from the University's Department of Mathematical Sciences and with
student teachers, in-service teachers and the Department of Public
Instruction at Dover (DPI).
Baxter has served on the Mathematics Advisory Committee of DPI and has
been president of the Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He also
has been an officer of the Mathematical Association of America.
The award is given in honor of the late G. Cuthbert Webber, who joined
the faculty in 1937 and was a professor of mathematical sciences until his
death in 1981. A leader in the revision of middle school mathematics and
known for his work with elementary and secondary school teachers, Webber
was co-author with John Brown, professor emeritus of education, of
Mathematics for the Elementary School Teacher, which promoted the concept
of understanding content as the focus of math education in the 1960s.
