On the Job

Since we opened in October 1992, the Bob Carpenter Sports Convocation
Center has already become a campus landmark. Bill Cosby was the most
successful attraction, and Phish, Lenny Kravitz and Meat Loaf were the most
successful rock concerts. The first major event was the Greaseband dance
for Homecoming '92. Everyone was excited. You can't help it, the place just
generates enthusiasm. This is a place where you can come in and see the
stars. Country singers Kathy Mattea and Hal Ketchum were great to work
with, both were personable and genuinely nice people.
"Attendance at the basketball games has improved since moving the
games into the BCC. The place builds energy. Everyone wants to come and
share in the excitement. It's like a sense of fellowship, collective
behavior, everyone sharing the same feeling.
"Other events at the center have included trade shows, exhibits and
concerts. With a little preparation, you name it, we can do it. We've even
had an ice skating show, and another successful program featured the
Lipizzaner Stallions.
"All the events are satisfying, especially winning close games and
having this place filled with fans. The Delaware men's last-second
basketball victory over Del State was great, and the women's basketball
victory over Vermont was a real crowd pleaser.
"Our goal is to have people come here, enjoy the event and leave with
a smile on their faces. That's what it is all about."
