'Doc' Hill aces faculty shootout
For Robert Hill (aka "Doc" on the basketball court), professor of
physics and astronomy, stardom as a basketball player has been a long time
coming. Now he is acknowledged as the University's outstanding
faculty/staff hoopster.
He came in first at an invitational competition to shoot baskets from
the 3-point line, held at half-time during the Delaware men's game Feb. 13
with the University of Vermont. For his outstanding performance he won not
only accolades but a leather attache case.
As an undergraduate at Carleton College, Doc had the distinction of
being the last one cut on the freshman team and was invited to play again
as a junior, but a college romance intervened. His distinguished basketball
career continued at Yale University, where he played pick-up games with
other graduate students. On one occasion, the Yale varsity showed up and
demanded the court. The grad students refused, saying the team would have
to beat them first. The varsity went down in defeat and had to wait its
turn.
Now Doc, who admits to loving the game and who regularly plays
basketball at noon with a group of assorted players from the University
community, has reached the pinnacle of his sports career. At the contest,
he defeated such center court luminaries as James Butkiewicz, associate
dean of the College of Business and Economics; Stuart Cooper, dean of the
College of Engineering; and E. Kent St. Pierre, chairperson and professor
of accounting and contest runner-up.
Doc modestly attributes his success to having a lucky day and being in
good shape from shoveling snow. He also casually notes that he was the only
bona fide faculty member competing with administrators.
