Volleyball tournament
The first annual Alpha Phi Sorority volleyball heart tournament will
be held Sunday, Sept. 12, on Harrington Beach, to benefit the American
Heart Association. The cost of the event, which is sponsored by 93.7 WSTW
and the Down Under, is $20 per four-person team. A post-tournament bash and
awards ceremony will be held at the Down Under.
Registration must be made before Sept. 12. To register, stop by the

UDARF luncheon
The brown-bag luncheon schedule for the University Association of
Retired Faculty is set for the following Tuesdays: Oct. 12; Oct. 26; Nov.
9; Nov. 23; and Dec. 7. Meetings are held in the Read Room of the Perkins
Student Center.

Literacy improvement
The Literacy Improvement Program is being offered again this fall for
employees who wish to upgrade their reading, writing and spelling skills.
There is no charge and there are two sessions to choose from, from
noon-2 p.m. and from 3-5 p.m., both held on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
beginning Sept. 28.
The sessions meet in the first floor conference room at 87 East Main

Virden Center offer
The Virden Center is offering special discounted fall rates for
University employees. From Sept. 7-Oct. 31, a single room is $45 per night
and a double is $55 per night. From Nov. 1-April 14, a single is $30 per
night and a double is $40 per night.

International travel
Guidelines and applications for University international travel awards
and international mini-grants are available in individual departments or
from International Programs and Special Sessions. Those planning activities
are invited to apply for funds.
Applications are accepted on a continuing basis and are reviewed
periodically. During the 1993-94 year, reviews will take place Oct. 1,
Dec.17, March 18 and June 3. Award notifications will be sent approximately
10 days to two weeks after each deadline. The maximum amount awarded is
$200.
Applications for international mini-grants will continue to operate in
cycles. The fall cycle will be for activities planned from Jan. 1-June 30,
1994. The deadline for the fall cycle is Nov. 19. The spring cycle deadline
will be May 20, and will cover activities planned from July 1-Dec. 31,
1994. The maximum amount for this grant is $1,000.

B&G seafood dinner
The Blue and Gold Club will offer a Chesapeake seafood dinner from 5-8
p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18. The buffet will be presented in a casual setting
under a tent on the club's west lawn. The menu will include steamed crabs,
fried oysters, steamed shrimp, Manhattan clam chowder with oyster crackers,
steamed clams, snow crab clusters, London broil, barbecued chicken, pasta
salad, coleslaw, Old Bay fries, corn on the cob, fresh fruit, fruit pies,
ice cream and more.
The buffet is $28 per person, which includes a 12 percent service

Ag open house
An open house will be held at the University's Research and Education
Center's wildlife and conservation plant nursery near Georgetown, from
9-10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 25. The demonstration plots are located along
County Road 444, which runs through the University farm between Route 9 and
Road 446.
Cooperative Extension is sponsoring the open house in cooperation with
the Delaware Chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation, First State Quail
Unlimited and the Sussex Conservation District and Soil Conservation
Service Plant Material Center.
The purpose of this event is to familiarize landowners with the
demonstration of nursery, which has been designed for use as a reference in
deciding which conservation plant materials are best suited for areas that
are too wet to farm, low producing or that are next to sensitive wetlands.

Drugs, alcohol meeting
The AFL-CIO Community Services will conduct a statewide Drug and
Alcohol conference from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, in Arsht Hall
on the Wilmington Campus.
Gov. Thomas Carper will welcome attendees to the one-day conference,
with registration and a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
The cost of the conference is $40, which covers registration,
