Students invited to take a trip on the superhighway

It's time for students to begin a trip of their own on the information
superhighway-the Internet, following a "U-Discover! the Global Community"
Internet Fair held for faculty and staff during Winter Session.
The Student Internet Awareness Initiative (SIAI) begins this spring,
and coordinator Janet de Vry said, "The SIAI events are designed to help
students navigate through the incredible amount of information available on
the Internet."
As a starting point, the satellite teleconference, "Exploring
Internet," will be broadcast on UDTV's channel 48 from 1-4 p.m., Feb. 14
and 18, and from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 24. This teleconference presents the what,
when, where and why of the Internet-the largest computer network in the
world.
Also this month, examples of useful information that students can
access from the campus network and from the Internet will be demonstrated
in the Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center. The first demonstration
will be held from 2:30-4 p.m., Feb. 15, and a second demonstration will be
held from 3-4:30 p.m., Feb. 23. Although all members of the University
community are welcome, the demonstrations will focus on information
relevant to Delaware students. No pre-registration is necessary.
Each demonstration will consist of a 45-minute presentation by a CNS
staff member and a 15-minute question-and-answer period. Afterward,
students will be able to experiment on their own using one of the computers
to be set up in the Ewing Room; and student assistants will be available to
answer questions.
The demonstrations will show how to search for such information as
another student's phone number, a correspondent's e-mail address or a voice
mailbox number; look up personal information such as grades, financial aid
and class schedules; search for University publications such as student
newsletters and newspapers; locate information such as press releases from
the White House; and access worldwide information beyond the University's
network.
Later, in March and April, student consultants will present similar
demonstrations in the residence halls, sponsored by the Office of Housing
and Residence Life.
