U.N.I.T.Y. program to begin Feb. 15

     A variety of events, including a talk by former U.S. Rep. Shirley
Chisholm and a one-woman show on abolitionist Harriet Tubman, will be
presented at the University during February and March, as part of "African
Consciousness Celebration '94: U.N.I.T.Y. (Understanding Now Inspires
Tomorrow's Youth)."
     The events are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.
     Opening the series Tuesday, Feb. 15, will be a reception and
discussion, entitled "Unity in the Community II." Co-sponsored with Kappa
Alpha Psi fraternity, this program is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. in the Rodney
Room of the Perkins Student Center.
     On Wednesday, Feb. 23, "The Importance of Black History" will be the
subject of a talk by Lenworth Gunther, professor of black American studies
at Essex County College. The talk begins at 7 p.m. in Room 100 of the
Kirkbride Lecture Hall.
     On Tuesday, March 1, James Chapman's play, Our Young Black Men Are
Dying, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Newark Hall.
Admission to this event is $3 for students, $4 for University faculty and
staff and $5 for the general public. Tickets go on sale Feb. 14 at Haneef's
Bookstore in Wilmington and at the Hartshorn box office. For ticket

     Hats: A Tribute to Harriet Tubman, Sandra Dunson Franks in a one-woman
show about the famous abolitionist, will be presented at 7:30 p.m.,
Wednesday, March 9, in the Bacchus Theatre of the Perkins Student Center.
     On Monday, March 14, Asa Hilliard, the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of
Urban Education at Georgia State University, will speak on "The State of
Black America: Reflections and Solutions" at 7 p.m. in the Rodney Room of
the Perkins Student Center. This program is co-sponsored with the Black
Student Union.
     A bus tour exploring black cultural heritage will travel to
Washington, D.C., on Saturday, March 19. The bus will leave the
University's Center for Black Culture, located at 192 South College Ave.,
at 7 a.m. Cost of the trip is $10 for the general public and U.D. students
and $7 for children from ages 3 to 12.
     The celebration concludes on Wednesday, March 23, with Shirley
Chisholm speaking on "African-American Women: Unbought and Unbossed."
Scheduled at 7:30 p.m. in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center,
this program is co-sponsored with the Black Student Union and Lambda Delta
