NEXUS, global music master percussionists, will perform at 8:15 p.m.,
Saturday, Feb. 19, in Mitchell Hall. The performance is a highlight of the
University's first Percussion Ensemble Festival-an all-day event for area
percussionists also on Feb. 19.
The word "nexus" means "a connection or tie among the members of a
group or series."
The musicians in the ensemble apply that to the music of percussion
instruments that forms a connection not only among them but also among the
cultures of many different people throughout the world.
Since 1971, NEXUS has built a global repertoire and a reputation to
match. The group plays everything from tablas to conch shells, from
Ghanaian compositions to works by John Cage, in venues from Tanglewood to
Tokyo.
Between 100 and 200 instruments are used in every NEXUS performance.
Tickets for NEXUS are $15 for the general public, $10 for University
faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $6 for students. For reservations,
call the University's box office at 831-2204.
There is no charge for other aspects of the Percussion Ensemble
Festival, which will feature performances by the percussion ensembles of
Temple University, Rowan University, Penn State and the University of
Delaware and the Pes Percussion Ensemble.
Members of NEXUS will comment on performances and discuss various
musical aspects. The performances and critiques begin at 10 a.m. in the Amy
E. du Pont Music Building.
An afternoon session from 2-6 p.m. will include master classes by
Glenn Steele of Temple University; Dean Witten of Rowan University; Dan
Armstrong of Penn State University; Morgan Maddox of Immaculata College and
the Valley Forge Military College; and Harvey Price of the University of
Delaware.
For more information on events, call the University's Department of
Music, at 831-2577.
NEXUS' appearance at the University is sponsored by the Office of
Alumni and University Relations and was made possible by a grant from the
Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the Lila Wallace-Reader's
Digest National Jazz Network, the Delaware Division of the Arts and the
National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
