Prof. speaks on TV violence
On a frigid morning before 8 o'clock on Jan. 19, Nancy Signorielli,
professor of communication, was interviewed in her Newark Hall office about
television violence and its impact on children by Barbara Rabb of NBC's
Dateline, as part of the network's series on violence in America.
Her research in this area was brought to the attention of the news
staff by Risa Behmoiram, a U. of D. student who is serving as an intern
with Dateline during Winter Session.
The segment aired Tuesday, Jan. 25, after President Bill Clinton's
State of the Union address and the follow-up commentary.
Signorielli was described on the program as a "chief investigator of a
25-year study of television violence," and she spoke about children getting
the message that the way to solve problems is through violence.
Signorielli has received national recognition for her research on
television violence. She testified last May in Washington, D.C., at a
hearing held by the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on
Telecommunications and Finance Oversight.
Her testimony was based on her work with the Cultural Indicators
Research Project, which has tracked violence and other themes on television
since 1967.
