Earthquakes recorded by DGS
Earthquakes and aftershocks from the Los Angeles and Reading, Pa.,
areas were recorded by the seismograph network operated by the Delaware
Geological Survey (DGS) at the University in Newark.
On Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 15, and 16, earthquakes of 4.0 and 4.6
magnitude occurred in the vicinity of Reading. Since then, about three
dozen aftershocks have been recorded on DGS instruments. Some reports have
been received from persons in Delaware who felt the larger of the
Pennsylvania earthquakes.
The DGS is calculating arrival times and magnitudes for all of the
events recorded during the past several days. The data will be shared with
the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, the National Earthquake Information
Center and other seismic observatories.
As information is compiled from seismographs in various locations
around the earthquake, details of its location and relation to specific
geologic features will become available.
The major California earthquakes were clearly and strongly received by
DGS seismographs.
Because of the great distance between California and Delaware only the
strongest of the aftershocks have been detected here.
