Nursing student receives scholarship

Donna Todaro Gisleson, a University of Delaware graduate student in
nursing of Sicklerville, N.J., is the recipient of a $2,500 Nurses
Educational Funds Scholarship Award. The scholarship, from the Liesel M.
Hiemenz Scholarship Fund, is one of 16 awards made nationally for the study
of nursing at the master's degree level.
The award recognizes Gisleson's academic achievements and her
potential as a future leader of the nursing profession.
Gisleson said she chose to enroll in the University's Family Nurse
Practitioner program because of her desire to become a nurse practitioner
who could serve several populations.
"I wanted something global," she said. "Something that would not limit
me-that would allow me to work with children and women, for example. I
thought that was the best option for someone like myself who can expect to
be in the workforce for 30-40 years."
The concept of nurse practitioner is becoming more and more popular as
the idea gains acceptance with the general public, she said. It is a
profession that would play an important role if President Clinton's
proposed health care reforms are adopted. Gisleson is an RN with a
bachelor's degree in nursing from Catholic University. She works full time
at St. Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia.
