Board of Trustees names seven for honors, degrees
The University of Delaware Board of Trustee selected seven individuals
for special recognition, including two who will receive honorary degrees,
at its semiannual meeting Dec. 14.
Those individuals selected by the board as recipients of honorary
degrees were Hanna Holborn Gray, noted scholar and past president of the
University of Chicago, to receive a doctor of humane letters; and Jane
Richards Roth, an enthusiastic supporter of women's rights and judge on the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third District, to receive a doctor of laws.
The University of Delaware Medal of Distinction, presented to
individuals in recognition of outstanding professional achievements, will
go to
* Leonard W. Quill, Delaware alumnus and chairman, president and
chief executive officer of Wilmington Trust Co.; and
* Bernard C. Watson, president and chief operating officer of the
William Penn Foundation.
The University of Delaware Medal of Merit, made in recognition of
contributions to human progress through devotion to enduring
values and service to others, will be awarded to three
individuals:
* Endsley P. Fairman, former secretary, senior vice president and
head of the Trust Department at Wilmington Trust Co. and
executive secretary of Longwood Foundation Inc. from 1973-92;
* Joseph F. Hulihan, former president and chief operating officer
of Diamond State Telephone and recipient of the 1992 Marvel Cup
for outstanding community service by the Delaware State Chamber
of Commerce; and
* Burt C. Pratt, a retired research scientist with the DuPont Co.,
former director of Crystal Trust and recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement in Philanthropy Award from the National Society of
Fund Raising Executives in 1988.
