Dependent health/dental insurance coverage regulations

Employees concerned about medical coverage for dependent children who
are reaching age 21 ask two questions: "How long will my child continue on
my health insurance?" and "What about dental coverage?"
Health insurance coverage ends Dec. 31 of the year the dependent child
reaches age 21, unless the child is a full-time student, in which case some
health plans allow continuation of coverage.
Comprehensive, Total Health Plus, HMO and Principal plans permit
dependent children who are full-time students to continue coverage beyond
the age 21 cutoff. This extension continues until the dependent child
reaches age 24 or ceases to be a full-time student, whichever occurs first.
Basic and Basic Plus plans do not offer an extension of coverage for
full-time students.
Metropolitan Life, the University's dental plan insurer, covers a
dependent child until the end of the month in which the child reaches age
19. Full-time student dependents (according to Internal Revenue Service
regulations) can continue coverage until the end of the month in which they
reach age 23.
