University Singers with orchestra
     The University Singers, directed by Ruth Oatman, will appear with the
Kennett Symphony Orchestra (KSO) as part of a candlelight concert at 8
p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, in the Kennett High School auditorium in Kennett
Square, Pa.
     For this performance, the group will be directed by conductor Mary
Woodmansee Green, Delaware '68, who is KSO music director.
     The evening will open with a pre-concert talk by Corbin McNeill,
president of Philadelphia Electric Co. Performers featured will include
Alan Wagner, baritone; Alexandra Pechhold, flutist; and Sharon Richards,
soprano.

Reading of new play set Dec. 2
      A script-in-hand reading of a new play by Jeanne Murray Walker,
professor of English, will be presented at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, in
Room 100 of Kirkbride Lecture Hall. The reading is free and open to the
public.
     Directed by Nancy King, professor in the University Honors Program,
Leaving It All Behind is a two-act, work-in-progress being developed in an
honors class at the University.
     Walker's first play, Stories from the National Enquirer, was developed
with King in a class at the University. It won the Washington National
Theatre Competition in 1990 and was subsequently performed in Washington,
D.C., Boston and London. Her second play, The Chosen Daughter, was
commissioned by the Arena Theatre in Chicago and will open in April. She
also is the author of four books of poetry.
     King, originally trained as a dancer and choreographer, has written
more than 12 plays for audiences of all ages. Her most recent work, Until
We Notice, will be produced by the Honors Program next spring. Her many
articles and books include Storymaking and Drama: An Approach to Teaching
Language and Literature and A Movement Approach to Acting.

PTTP to offer two Shakespeare plays
     The Professional Theatre Training Program will present two
Shakespearean favorites, Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It , in rotating
repertory from Dec. 3-11. All performances will tbe staged in the Hartshorn
Hall Theatre.
     As You Like It opens on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. and will be
repeated at the same time on Sunday, Dec. 5; Tuesday, Dec. 7; Thursday,
Dec. 9; and Saturday, Dec. 11.
     Romeo and Juliet can be seen at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4;
Wednesday, Dec. 8; and Friday, Dec. 10; and at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec.
5, and Saturday, Dec. 11.
     Ticket prices for Friday and Saturday evenings are $12 for the general
public, $10 for University faculty, staff and senior citizens and $8 for
full-time University students. Weeknight tickets cost $11 for the general
public, $9 for University faculty, staff and senior citizens and $5 for
full-time University students. Costs for matinees and Sunday evening
performances are $9 for the general public, $7 for University faculty,
staff and senior citizens and $4 for full-time University students.

Self-defense class in Saturday a.m.
     David Finnie, University police officer and second degree black belt
in Pasa Ryu martial arts, is offering a self-defense training program on
Saturday mornings for 12 weeks beginning Dec. 4.
     Classes for 6-12 year olds will be held at 9 a.m. Students 13 years
and older will be taught during the 10 a.m. session.
     The training will take place in the front gym of the Carpenter Sports
Building. Cost is $40 per person, $55 for two family members and $75 per
family, with three or more immediate family members.
     No classes will be held on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.
     The program is sponsored by the Recreation and Intramural Programs.

Music faculty in holiday concerts
     Faculty artists from the University of Delaware's Department of Music
will present a festive salute to the holiday season at 8 p.m., Monday and
Tuesday, Dec. 13 and 14, in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont
Music Building.
     A special feature of the program will be the Nutcracker Suite,
performed on two pianos by Julie Nishimura, faculty accompanist, and
Michael Steinberg, professor of music.
     Also featured will be the Mendelssohn String Quartet, the Del'Arte
Woodwind Quintet, Delaware Brass, the Taggart-Grycky Flute and Guitar Duo
and soprano Marie Robinson.
     Proceeds benefit the Department of Music scholarship fund.
     Tickets are $8 for the general public, $5 for University faculty,
staff and senior citizens and $2 for University students.

BFA exhibitions to feature students
     Six students from the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program are
presenting exhibitions of their work in Newark during the first week of
December. All have completed courses of concentrated studies in their
chosen fields of art.
     From 5-7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 3, four students will hold opening
receptions. Julie Collins and Erika Mathis will show photography and
printmaking in the Janvier Gallery at 56 Delaware Ave. Richard Stevenson
will display his photography in the Halloween Gallery at286 East Main St.
Jodi Rebhun will exhibit her art in metalwork at the Commons Room (Room
101) of Recitation Hall.
     Two other receptions will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10, when
the featured artworks will include photography by James Dingilian at the
Janvier Gallery, and illustration by Amy Sobocinski, in Recitation Hall's
Commons Room.

Research day in nursing college
     The Department of Nursing will hold a Research Colloquia Day from 8
a.m.-12:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10. Each candidate for the Master of Science
in Nursing degree will present a thesis research/scholarly project.

Two CTE programs set in December
     A program on "Colleagues Observing Colleagues" and another on "Active
Learning Strategies and Alternatives to Lectures" will be presented by the
Center for Teaching Effectiveness (CTE) during December.
     Judy Green, CTE associate director, will offer the first presentation
from 12:15-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 7, in the Ewing Room of the Perkins
Student Center.
     Araya Debessay, professor of accounting, will present the workshop on
alternatives to lectures from 12:15-1:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 13, in the
Ewing Room.
