Film producer on campus Dec. 6
Elaine Kim, co-producer of a documentary film exploring the effect the
Rodney King verdict and resulting riot had on Korean-American women
shopkeepers, will introduce her film and lead a discussion of it at 7:30
p.m., Monday, Dec. 6, in Room 115 of Purnell Hall.
The film, entitled Saigu, looks at the shattering of the American
dream for these shopkeepers, who suffered more than half of the material
losses in the riot.
Kim is professor of Asian-American studies and faculty assistant for
the status of women at the University of California at Berkeley. She also
is associate producer of Slaying the Dragon: Asian Women in U.S. Television
and Film and is currently working with visual artist Betty Kano on Visions
and Fierce Dreams: Lives and Work of Asian-American Visual Artists.
In addition, she is the author of Asian-American Literature: An
Introduction to the Writings and Their Social Context, Misrepresentations
of Asian Americans in the News and the forthcoming Between Black and White:
An Interview with Korean American Community Activist Bong Hwan Kim.
