A&S dean Richards elected to national position
Mary Richards, dean of the College of Arts and Science at the
University of Delaware, is the newest president-elect of the Council of
Colleges of Arts and Science (CCAS).
A nationwide organization, CCAS represents individual liberal arts
colleges as well as colleges of arts and science within comprehensive
research universities. Current membership totals 415 institutions
throughout the United States and Canada.
The organization was founded in 1965 with the purpose of nurturing and
sustaining the arts and science as the leading influences in American
higher education. The Council of Colleges of Arts and Science serves as a
forum for the exchange of ideas and information among deans of colleges and
also acts as a representative of the liberal arts at the national
policy-making level.
Richards was elected at the national meeting, held Nov. 17-20 in
Cincinnati.
She will assume the presidency at the next meeting, to be held next
November in Portland, Ore.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate with English honors from Southern Methodist
University, Richards holds master's and doctoral degrees from the
University of Wisconsin in Madison.
Her academic career began in 1971 at the University of Tennessee,
where she served in several roles, including assistant to the vice
president for academic affairs, director of undergraduate studies in the
Department of English, assistant dean for graduate studies, associate dean
of the Graduate School in Knoxville and associate dean and then acting dean
of the College of Liberal Arts there.
In 1988, she was named dean of liberal arts at Auburn University,
joining the Delaware community in July 1991.
