Famous choreographer to address winter grads
Award-winning Broadway choreographer and Delaware alumna Susan Stroman
will be featured speaker at the University of Delaware's 1994 Winter
Commencement, scheduled at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, in the Bob Carpenter
Sports/Convocation Center.
This annual ceremony recognizes students who complete their degree
requirements in August and December.
Each graduating student is entitled to a maximum of seven guest
tickets, which will be distributed Dec. 13-17 at the Student Services
Building.
Students planning to participate in Winter Commencement must wear
academic caps and gowns, which are available from the University Bookstore.
Special order forms, which have been mailed to graduating students, also
are available at the bookstore.
Stroman, Delaware '76, is currently working with Hal Prince on a new
production of Showboat.
Last year, Stroman won the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award and the
Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding choreography for Crazy for You.
The London production of that show won her the coveted Laurence Olivier
Award.
Her choreography of the off-Broadway production of The World Goes
'Round, which she also co-conceived, brought her the 1991 Outer Critics
Circle Award.
She also choreographed Liza-Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hall,
starring Liza Minelli, and the subsequent world tour of that production.
She has choreographed several shows for the New York City Opera, including
Don Giovanni, A Little Night Music and 110 in the Shade. Her other
choreography credits include the successful off-Broadway and Los Angeles
productions of Flora the Red Menace.
On television, she directed "An Evening with the Boston Pops-A Tribute
to Leonard Bernstein " and co-conceived and choreographed "Sondheim-A
Celebration at Carnegie Hall" for PBS and "Liza at Radio City Music Hall"
for HBO.
Stroman received the 1992 Dance Educators of America Award for her
dedicated service in dance.
In May, she was inducted into the University's Wall of Fame, a
photographic exhibit in the Alumni Room of the Perkins Student Center that
recognizes alumni achievements in many fields.
