Computing hours
     All central computing systems and applications will be up and
available Nov. 25-26, during the Thanksgiving holidays.
     Information on computer system operations, as well as other University
units, during the December holiday period will be detailed in the Dec. 2
issue of UpDate.

Holiday dance
     The Department of Recreation and Intramural Programs will sponsor a
semiformal holiday dance from 8-11 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, in the front gym
of the Carpenter Sports Building. The Serenaders, a 13-piece orchestra,
will provide music.
     Cost, which includes a light dinner buffet, is $5 for full-time
students and $10 for all others. Tickets will be available at the door for
$12.
     For advance registration, visit the Carpenter Sports Building front
desk between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Library hours
     The Morris Library will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov.
24; closed from Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 25-27; and will reopen from 11
a.m.-midnight, Sunday, Nov. 28.
     Following are library hours for the period beginning Monday, Nov. 29,
and ending Wednesday, Dec. 22: Mondays-Thursdays--8 a.m.-midnight;
Fridays--8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturdays--9 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Sundays--11
a.m.-midnight.
     The library will offer extended hours for exams on the following
dates: Fridays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 8 a.m.-10 p.m.; Saturdays, Dec. 11 and
18, from 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; and Wednesday, Dec. 22, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
     Special Collections and the Exhibition Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5
p.m., Monday-Friday, and Tuesdays until 8 p.m.

Family buffet
     The Blue and Gold Club will hold its monthly Family Night Buffet from
5-8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 1. The buffet will include grilled chicken
parmesan, macaroni and cheese and a make-your-own sundae bar.
     Price is $10.95 for adults, $5.95 for children ages 3 to 10 and free
for children under 3.
     Club membership is required, and all University employees are
eligible. First-time members receive $10 off their first year's dues.

Staff cruise
     The University Staff Association will sponsor a five-night cruise on
the Regent Rainbow, departing Sunday, Feb. 27 and returning Friday, March
4. Ports of call will include Tampa, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Key West
and Tampa.
     Cost, including roundtrip airfare, is $750 per person for an inside

Diversity workshops
     The Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity will hold its
last one-day "Welcoming Diversity" workshop this fall from 8:30 a.m.-4:30
p.m., in Room 117 of the Pencader Complex.
     The workshop is designed to help participants understand and deal with
various forms of discrimination and to bring the campus closer to achieving
a community where dialog and discourse are the dictates of the day.

Hunger awareness
     The Resident Student Association and the Student Environmental Action
Coalition (SEAC) will sponsor the annual hunger awareness dinner tonight in
Kent, Russell and Rodney dining halls as well as at the Upper Deck and
Center Court. This year, students will be able to donate points or meals to
charity in each of these dining halls.
     SEAC will have tables in each location with information about food and
the environment, as well as sheets describing this year's charities:
Freedom from Hunger and Sojourners' Place. In addition, SEAC has provided
fliers for all five dining halls focusing on the uneaten food that gets
wasted daily across campus.

Telling stories
     The Center for Teaching Effectiveness (CTE) will offer a workshop
entitled "Personal Storytelling," from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22,
in the Collins Room of the Perkins Student Center.
     W. Gary Smith, assistant professor of plant and soil sciences, will
demonstrate how he uses storytelling in his course, "Plants and Human
Culture," to connect students' personal histories with the broader history
of plants and people.

Open studio
     Seven Newark artisans will feature their work at the fourth annual
Joint Open Studio from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 4-5, at
278 Orchard Rd. in Newark.
     The majority of the artisans are members of the Pennsylvania Guild of
Craftsmen, and they show their work in local galleries and craft fairs.
Included in the show from the University community are jeweler Gladys
Sharnoff; fabric designer Jo Hill; and quilter Cindy Peterson.
