Retirees continue to make substantial contributions
Univesity retirees remain active after leaving the University. The
following list illustrates a number of the achievements of some former
University employees.
John Murray, currently of Landenberg, Pa., professor emeritus and
former Parallel Program dean, is a member of the National Park Service task
force seeking U.S. Congress designation of the White Clay Creek and its
tributaries as a national wild and scenic river. This designation would
ensure long-term protection and improvement of the natural resources and
environmental quality of the entire White Clay Valley and watershed in
Delaware and Pennsylvania. Murray also chairs the project's public
education and information committee.
Walther Kirchner, currently of Baltimore, H. Rodney Sharp Professor
Emeritus of History, continues to be active writing book reviews on
economic themes in European history from 1500-1900, writing articles on
economic topics in Russian-Western Relations and giving lectures at
universities worldwide.
Johan J. Groot, professor emeritus in the Delaware Geological Survey,
has continued to study fossil pollen and spores that occur in Coastal Plain
sediments. His investigations have resulted in the publication of a paper
entitled, "Plant Microfossils of the Calvert Formation of Delaware."
Daniel Teis, former chairperson of the Department of Art, is currently
participating in two exhibitions in Wilmington: At the Delaware Art Museum
a show of works from collectors of regional artists and a one-person
exhibition of at Studio One. He recently participated in a group exhibition
at the Sommerville Manning Gallery. Teis also has several works held for
viewing at Axis gallery in Philadelphia. He has completed a number of
commissioned works in the past year, including three paintings for Mitsui
Bank in Tokyo.
Wilbur Hesseltine, professor emeritus in the Department of Animal
Science, enjoys working on his farms in Townsend and Cheswold. During his
first 14 years of retirement, he put in 1,600 hours of flying time.
Marvin B. Sussman, Unidel Professor Emeritus of Individual and Family
Studies, is the author of a series of articles on publishing, which
appeared in Publishing in Journals on the Family: Essays on Publishing. His
works in progress include a second edition of his Handbook on Marriage and
the Family and a new theoretically based textbook on family-organizational
linkages.
Joyce Kee, associate professor emerita in the College of Nursing, has
published seven books and 13 articles relating to nursing over the past
year. In addition, she has presented 57 seminars and workshops. Currently,
she is conducting research with assistant professor Laura S. Griffin,
entitled "Determination of the Effectiveness of Teaching About Salt
Reduction and a Relaxation Technique on Blood Pressures in Potentially
Hypertensive Young Adults in a University Community."
T. Elbert Chance, former director of alumni relations, continues as
the Delaware Stadium football announcer, as well as secretary of the board
of directors of the Newark Country Club. He wrote two historical columns
for News Journal regional supplements: "Newark As It Was" in Compass and
"Delmarva Revisited" in Delmarva Crossroads. Chance is a columnist for The
Newark Post, contributing one to two columns a month, and with the
assistance of Duke Detjen, son of a former University professor, he has
written many songs, several of which have become copyrighted.
Charles F. Eastman, former technical clerk in the College of Human
Resources, is a volunteer for several Newark organizations, serving as "Mr.
Fix-It" for the Newark Day Nursery and as a librarian at the Newark Senior
Center.
Jane T. Steele, former secretary in Plant Operations, has been
devoting her time creating oil paintings. Her recent works have been
portraits, including one of Abraham Lincoln.
Shirley F. Anderson, former assistant director of the American
Philosophical Association, has started a meeting planning business, which
includes planning and organizing professional meetings, class reunions,
office parties and receptions. She also volunteers at the Newark Manor
Nursing Home and the Newark Senior Center.
Ed Staniszewski, former pastry chef in Dining Services, has opened a
barber shop, "Mister Ed" family barber, on Lancaster Pike in Wilmington.
Helen M. Long, former office coordinator in the Department of Physics
and Astronomy, worked as office manager for the S.B. Woo Congressional
Campaign in 1991. She served as secretary for a NATO Conference in Corfu,
Greece, with G.C. Hadjipanayis of the University's Department of Physics
and Astronomy.
