Pool tourney planned in Perkins Sports Lounge

It may not be the smoke-filled setting made famous in countless
movies, but it's pool, and its been happening every Friday for the last
five weeks in the Sports Lounge of the Perkins Student Center. On Saturday
and Sunday, Nov. 20 and 21, a major tournament will be held.
Chris Stewart, student center building supervisor, recently started
the tournaments for University students. Each participant pays a $5 entry
fee, which goes toward the prizes of $50, $25, a six pack of soda and an
hour of free pool. Any extra money will be used to pay for maintenance of
the room and for equipment, such as the new wooden sticks that were
purchased recently, Stewart said.
The Friday tournaments are single elimination. All participants are
assigned a number and the bracket is then set up randomly. "We didn't have
any rules in the beginning, but we quickly established a set of guidelines,
combing tournament and bar rules, as each are very different," Stewart
said.
The tournament, scheduled for noon on Nov. 20 and 21, is a little
different from those played every Firday. It is a double elimination
contest, the brackets will still be set up randomly and the same rules will
apply.
Better prizes are being offered to the winners of the two-day tourney.
The grand prize is $100 cash, second prize is a University sweatshirt from
the bookstore, third prize is dinner for four at Zia's Pastaria and fourth
prize is a selection of CDs from Rainbow Records. Tournament sponsors will
donate the prizes, with the entry fee making up the grand prize.
The winner of this tournament will go on to represent the University
at the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) regional
tournament in February. The ACUI sponsors various tournaments for parlor
games, including darts, backgammon and chess. Next semester, Stewart said
he hopes to start weekly tournaments for these games as well.
The program has been successful so far, with about 20 participants in
each of the five tournaments. Registration is $5 in advance and $7 on the
day of the tournament.
