Contemporary art show to open gallery
The University Gallery will present "Contemporary Art from the Jason
Rubell Collection" and "Keepin' Up with the Joneses," sculpture by New York
artist Garrick Dolberg, from Sept. 8 through Oct. 15.
Collector Jason Rubell, whose first acquisition was made at the age of
14, and Barry Blinderman, director of the University Galleries at Illinois
State University and curator for this traveling exhibition, will be on hand
Wednesday, Oct. 6, to give a walking tour of the Rubell Collection.
A reception with Dolberg is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 16, from
4:30-7 p.m.
In addition, a noontime lecture at the gallery is planned by Donald
Taglialatella, Delaware '90, for Wednesday, Sept. 22. Taglialatella, who
received a degree in art history, is director of Avanti Galleries Inc. in
New York and will talk about collecting contemporary art.
The Rubell Collection and lecture, co-sponsored by the University
Gallery and the Department of Art, are made possible in part with support
from the Faculty Senate Committee on Cultural Activities and Public Events.
The University Gallery is located on the second floor of Old College.
All University Gallery events are free and open to the public.
Hours for both exhibitions are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through
Fridays, and 1-5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed all
University holidays. It is wheelchair accessible, and individuals in need
of special assistance are encouraged to call 831-8242 prior to visiting.
Comedian, rocker in Carpenter Center
Tickets are now on sale for performances this month at the Bob
Carpenter Center by comedian Kevin Nealon and rock star Lenny Kravitz.
Nealon, a Saturday Night Live cast member since 1986, will take the
Carpenter stage on Thursday, Sept. 9, and Kravitz and his Universal Love
Tour will stop here on Tuesday, Sept. 28. Both shows begin at 8 p.m.
Nealon, who anchors "The Weekend Update" segment on NBC's Saturday
Night Live, is well-known for such comedic characters on the show as Franz
of Hans and Franz and the Subliminal Man, as well as his lively
impersonation of Sam Donaldson. He has appeared frequently on both Late
Night with David Letterman and The Tonight Show and performed in the films,
Roxanne and All I Want for Christmas.
Rock's renaissance man, Kravitz is appearing live tonight on MTV's
Music Video Awards. He combines his creativity, his proficiency on many
instruments and his skill in the recording studio to produce music that
combines rock 'n' roll, r&b, folk and fusion.
His third album, Are You Gonna Go My Way, examines themes of love and
liberation with a mix of styles ranging from Philly soul to psychedelia. On
his two earlier albums are "Let Love Rule" and "Mamma Said."
Tickets for the Sept. 9 Nealon show are $10 for U.D. students, faculty
and staff and $15 for the general public. Tickets for the Kravitz concert
on Sept. 28 are $15 for U.D. students, $17.50 for University faculty and
staff and $20 for the general public. A service charge may apply.
Tickets are available at the Carpenter Center box office and through
Ticketmaster, by calling 984-2000 or (215)336-2000. As a special
convenience, tickets also are on sale at the Mitchell Hall box office from
8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday, Sept. 2-3, and the same times on
Tuesdays through Thursdays in the following weeks.

Southern academy open house Sept. 8
The Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning (SDALL) will host a
wine and cheese party for current members and those interested in learning
more about the program from 3-5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Virden
Center in Lewes.
The public is invited to attend the party to find out about the
University of Delaware's educational cooperative for men and women 50 years
of age and older. Sponsored by the University's Division of Continuing
Education, SDALL has scheduled a wide variety of classes for the upcoming
semester.
Thirty classes will be offered this fall, and registration will be
held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 8-10, at the
Virden Center.
At SDALL, participants can choose from classes in traditional subjects
such as Spanish, history and science or enroll in a course to learn more
about horticulture, oil painting, pottery or other interests.
Courses are taught by SDALL members whose wide range of experience
often provides a new perspective for members of the class.
For example, Kenneth Fry, who will teach "Interpreting the
Press/Media" this fall, has worked for three major newspapers and
interviewed national leaders such as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and
Lyndon Johnson. A current events class will be taught by Lewis Purnell, a
retired foreign service officer, now employed as a consultant to the U.S.
Department of State.
Although SDALL is headquartered at the Virden Center, courses also
will be offered this fall at the Lewes Library, the Milford Museum, the
Rehoboth Art League and St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes.
For more information on the fall semester, for registration materials
or to make a reservation for the wine and cheese party, call 645-4111.
