Library holds ethnic food festival
Celebrating diversity was a fun, festive and flavorful affair when the
staff of the University Library held its third annual Ethnic Food Festival.
During a bright August day, the staff gathered on the library patio
during lunch hour to socialize and sample a tempting array of international
dishes prepared by staff members themselves. Flags of all nations decorated
the buffet tables, and music from all over the world, compiled by senior
assistant librarian Francis Poole, contributed to the international theme
of the celebration.
Sponsored by the Library Staff Association and the library's Diversity
Committee, the event was chaired by Debra Jenkins, library coordinator.
Approximately 100 staff members attended, several of whom had originally
lived in other countries or had worked or lived overseas.
"The occasion is a celebration of all that makes us individuals and
brings us together as a group," Jenkins said. "The festival is for and by
the members of the library staff and offers a delicious gumbo of ethnic
dishes."
Each dish had a small flag marking the country of origin, and many had
written recipes beside them for creative cooks to take home and try.
Indonesian chicken, Spanish gazpacho, Jewish nodel kugel, German plum
auflauf, Moroccan bread, American brownies and Ethiopian doro hat (a spicy
chicken stew) were among offerings at the international smorgasbord.
In addition to the festival, the Diversity Committee holds diversity
training and awareness programs throughout the year.
