Talk on Joyce, Barth Nov. 5 in Memorial                      
     Zack Bowen, president of the James Joyce Society, will speak on
"James Joyce and John Barth," at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5, in 110
Memorial Hall.                                               
     Bowen, who chaired the Department of English at the University
from 1976 to 1986, is an authority on the work of Joyce and other 
Irish writers as well as contemporary American novelists.    
     The author and editor of numerous volumes, he has produced and
directed recorded interpretations of Joyce's Ulysses  and performed as
a folk musician. His writing includes song lyrics, poems, limericks
and novels.                                                  
     Sponsored by the Department of English, the program is free and
open to the public.                                          
                                                       
Irish author to offer reading of works                       
     Eithne Strong, well-known and prolific Irish poet and short story
writer, will present a reading of her works at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday,
Nov. 10, in 114 of Purnell Hall.                             
     The author of three volumes of verse, Strong's poems and stories
have appeared in all the leading Irish journals and literary 
magazines.  She is the mother of nine children. Her late husband, 
Rupert Strong, also a poet, was founder of the Runa Press.   
     Of her work, one critic has remarked, "Few Irish writers of our
day have a more distinctive voice."                          
     Sponsored by the University's Department of English, the program
is free and open to the public.                              
                                                       
Faculty artworks in gallery exhibition                       
     Selected recent works in a wide range of media will be  
represented in "Heart of the Art: The Annual Department of Art Faculty
Exhibition,"  at the University Gallery from Monday, Nov. 2, through
Friday, Dec. 11.                                             
     This 14th annual presentation of faculty art will provide the
opportunity for the viewing public to become better acquainted with
the divergent styles and artistic processes represented by the work of
the teaching staff.                                          
     Among those exhibiting this year are painters Steve Tanis, Robert
Straight, Larry Holmes, Hilton Brown and Norman Sasowsky.    
     Other exhibiting faculty include Anne Graham, metals; Joe Moss,
sculpture; Victor Spinski, ceramics; Vera Kaminski, fibers; Randy 
Bolton and Rosemary Lane, printmaking; Martha Carothers, Ray Nichols
and Peter Croydon, visual communications; Charles Rowe, illustration;
and John Weiss and Priscilla Smith, photography.             
     An opening reception to honor the artists will be held from
4:30-6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2, at the gallery.              
                                                       
Baltimore reporter to talk on murder                         
     David Simon, police reporter for the Baltimore Sun and author of
Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets, will present a noontime
luncheon discussion Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the Ewing Room of the Perkins
Student Center.

Policy forum on telecommunications                           
     "The Future of Delaware's Telecommunications Infrastructure" is
the topic of a forum scheduled from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13, in
119 Clayton Hall.                                            
     The discussions will focus on telecommunications and the future,
perspectives on building a telecommunications infrastructure for the
information society, a consumer's views of the telecommunication
revolution and telecommunications in Delaware.               
     Cost is $30. Registration deadline is Nov. 10.          
     The day-long program is sponsored by the College of Urban Affairs
and Public Policy and the Delaware Public Administration Institute
(DAPI).

Talk on China to be held in Arsht Hall                       
     Ross Terrill, one of the leading authorities on China and a
research associate at Harvard's East Asian Center, will present a talk
at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, in Arsht Hall, on the University's
Wilmington Campus.                                           
     Terrill has been visiting China since 1964 and has written eight
books, including the recently published China In Our Time.   
     The free presentation is sponsored by the World Affairs Council
of Wilmington.
