B&E college alumni honored
The College of Business and Economics' Alumni Association
celebrated Homecoming Saturday by recognizing four successful
graduates: Henri L. Bertuch, Delaware '54, G. Dallas Green, Delaware
'81, Stephen M. Mockbee, Delaware '73, and Leonard W. Quill, Delaware
'58, '66M.
The chairman of the college's Alumni Award of Excellence
Committee, Robert P. McNutt, Delaware '69, presented the group's
second annual awards in a ceremony in Clayton Hall.
The criteria for the award include career achievement,
contribution to the business field, contribution to the community and
commitment to excellence, McNutt said.
Bertuch, who received a degree in business administration from
the University, is president of DVC Industries, Inc., which makes
loose-leaf binders and related products. With four offices around the
Eastern United States, the company has been profiled in INC magazine
for its successful use of an employee stock-ownership plan.
A pitcher on the University's baseball team in the 1950s, Green
was drafted out of school by the Philadelphia Phillies. He played in
the minor leagues for five years before advancing to the major
leagues, where played in 185 games for the New York Mets and
Washington Senators, retiring in 1967. After coaching for eight years,
Green led the Phillies to victory in the 1980 World Series. He
completed his degree requirementsat Delaware, and in 1981, received a
bachelor's degree in business administration. Currently, he is an
advance scout for the Mets.
Mockbee also holds a business administration degree from the
University. He is the founder, president and chief executive officer
of Bancroft Construction Co., a major local construction company in
the state of Delaware. Mockbee also is active in professional
development and in student mentoring programs between industry and
schools.
The recipient of a University master's degree as well as a
bachelor's degree, Quill was elected chairman, chief executive officer
and president of Wilmington Trust Co., in May 1992. Under his
direction, the company became the largest commercial lender in the
state, while sustaining a level of credit quality that ranks among the
best in the nation. Quill also is active in the United Way of
Delaware.
The first John F. Puglisi Scholarship was bestowed. Senior
accounting major Matthew G. Yancisin, who has a perfect 4.0 grade
point average, received the $5,000 award, which is named after the
father of MBNA America Business Professor Donal J. Puglisi, a
University professor of finance.
The college's alumni association also recognized Chaplin Tyler, a
lecturer in the University's Department of Chemical Engineering from
1946 to 1949, who announced a $2 million gift to the college in
April.
