Newly formed academic office to coordinate student services

A new office, the Academic Services Center (ASC) has been formed,
joining the Academic Advancement Office and the Academic Studies
Assistance Program, according to Margaret Andersen, vice provost. The
new unit is under the Office of the Provost.
"It was felt that the support services provided by Academic
Advancement and Academic Studies Assistance would be better
coordinated and more visible for the students they serve, if the two
units were combined," she said.
Lin Alessi directs ASC; Michael McClay is assistant director for
academic programs; and David Johns is assistant director for special
programs.
At its location at 231 South College Ave., the center provides
undergraduates with academic assistance through individual tutoring
for selected students and those with learning disabilities, group
study sessions, mentoring, academic success and study skills
workshops, advisement and referral.
Other ASC programs at this location include the Summer Enrichment
Program for incoming freshmen who could benefit from summer academic
and enrichment activities; the John Henry Taylor Scholars Program for
African Americans and Hispanics pursuing degrees in math and science;
the Student Support Services Program, a federal program for qualified
students; the Summer Qualifier Program for incoming freshmen accepted
through the Parallel Program who wish to come to the main campus; and
the Academic Advancement Scholars Program, which provides mentoring
and/or academic assistance to selected African-American scholarship
recipients.
At its location in Room 314 Willard Hall Education Building,
testing for students with learning disabilities is available. In
addition, summer programs for high schools students also are
administered there by ASC, including the Upward Bound Math/Science
Initiative and Upward Bound, both recently federally funded programs,
which assist disadvantaged students.
ASC also continues to administer Skilmod courses, one-credit
courses in academic self-management, study skills, critical thinking
and problem solving.
"The new arrangement will enable us to serve students more
efficiently and work more closely together, combining our resources
and expertise," Alessi said.
The new campus telephone directory uses the former names of ASC.
