CCM holds annual symposium

The Center for Composite Materials (CCM) held its annual research
symposium, "Research Issues for the Future of Composites," Sept. 16-17
in Clayton Hall to inform the center's industrial and Army sponsors
about ongoing research programs.
Invited lecturers included Donald L. Huntson of the National
Institute of Standards and Technology, who spoke on "Manufacturing
Issues in Composites"; Hugh Gray of the NASA Lewis Research Center,
who spoke on "Composites for Aerospace Applications"; and Douglas L.
Denton of Chrysler, who spoke on "Composites for Automotive
Applications."
In addition, the program included technical presentations, a
poster session, a facilities tour and the awarding of the Medal of
Excellence in Composite Materials.
The award was given to three former Du Pont scientists-Herbert
Blades, Stephanie L. Kwolek and the late Paul W. Morgan-for their role
in the development of Kelvar(r), a primary component of composites
used in tires, water craft, aircraft and aerospace vehicles.
